Our natural cotton muslin cloth is 100% cotton and undyed. The color is off white/cream. Muslin is often referred to as sheeting which can give the consumer an idea of the weight or feel if a sample is not available. Heavy weight cotton muslin weighs approximately 6 oz. per square yard and is available in widths from 9’ – 39’.
Uses in Theater
Muslin is the best choice for stage flats and scenery. The very wide widths available accommodate any stage or environment. The plain, non-directional weave is an ideal surface for painting. This muslin fabric has a dull, “clothy” finish which accepts all types of paint and bushes. In the case of scenery, muslin is stretched on wooden frames to create a tight drum-like surface. Prior to painting, the muslin is treated with a primer referred to as gesso or rabbit skin glue.
Cotton muslin is used for many other applications as well. This is a great craft and home fabric. Quilters use muslin for the backing on quilts. Dress designers use muslin for cutting patterns. Muslin is also used for curtains, room dividers, crafting, tablecloths, batik projects, clothing and so much more.
