What does a 16 oz canvas tarpaulin do? What makes it a “16-ounce” tarp? How does Chicago Canvas & Supply come up with the weight? The weight of a tarp is based on the physical weight per square yard. The heavier a tarp, the denser the fabric is. You might also see tarps measured in mils, which relates to the thickness. Ideally, look for the weight as a dense fabric is going to stand up to heavy use.

Benefits to 16 Oz Canvas Tarps

A 16 oz canvas tarp is made of 100% cotton. It resists both water and mildew, but it’s also a breathable fabric. Because it’s breathable, it’s not going to build up condensation under it.

The cotton is treated with an oil and wax coating to repel water and prevent mildew growth. If you need to wash the tarp, spray it off with a hose, dry it completely in the sun, and brush off any grass or leaves that blow onto it while it’s drying. Store in an airtight container to keep mice away when it’s not in use.

Grommets are placed about every two feet. These brass-plated grommets make it easy to secure the tarp over materials to prevent the wind from shifting it. You don’t have to worry about it blowing off the items you’re trying to protect.

The Best Uses for 16 Oz Canvas Tarps

The 16 oz canvas tarps at Chicago Canvas are designed for outdoor and industrial settings. Here are some of their best uses.

Outdoors and Camping

You shouldn’t use a 16 oz canvas tarp for your tent. You can use it to cover camping supplies. Protect your camp wood, fishing gear, grill, and other necessities from heavy dew. If you don’t mind the items possibly staining due to the oil/wax coating, this tarp resists water damage so that your items stay dry.

They also make good firewood covers. They’re heavier than the tarps you’d buy at a discount store, so they’ll stand up to heavy snow and ice. Do you have shrink-wrapped pallets of wood pellets to keep protected from rain or snow? Use this tarp to keep water from seeping into the shrink wrap.

You can protect gardening supplies until the weather allows you to get outside to plant. It keeps push mowers and snow blowers dry if you don’t have a garage or have room in your garage or shed.

Industrial Settings and Construction Sites

In an industrial setting or on a construction site, use canvas tarps to cover construction equipment for the night. You could use it to protect boxes containing doors and windows, sheetrock, lumber, and other building materials. As this cotton canvas tarp prevents condensation as temperatures change, you don’t have to worry about moisture ruining your supplies.

The boxes of compound pellets your wire manufacturing industry needs to keep dry are well protected by supply covers made of 16 oz canvas tarp. The skids of recyclables that are pending the hauler’s arrival stay dry on your loading dock. These tarps do a great job of keeping materials and supplies dry if a roof leaks or an unexpected cloudburst occurs.

Farms and Ranches

A heavy-duty canvas tarp also helps out on farms. Keep packages of wood shavings dry by stacking them on pallets and covering them with the tarp. Protect cedar posts until you need them. Keep your electric fencing protected until you can get out to check and replace the fencing. You can also use it to cover roofing shingles for the leaking barn roof.

When Shouldn’t You Choose This Water-Resistant Canvas Tarp?

There are a lot of ways you can use this tarp. When shouldn’t you use it? If you need a tarp to cover a car or boat, do not use the 16 oz canvas tarpaulin. You also do not want to use it for outdoor shelters like tents or patio walls and canopies. These tarps are coated with oil and wax to make them water and mildew resistant. They may have an odor you do not find pleasant, and they can stain. If staining or odors are not pleasing to you, try Iron Horse Polyester Tarps instead.

These tarps are available in custom sizes. You can also get them in the following cut sizes:

  • 5 x 7 feet

  • 5 x 7 feet
  • 6 x 8 feet
  • 8 x 10 feet
  • 10 x 12 feet
  • 12 x 14 feet

For color options, you have brown, gold, green, grey, olive drab, and white. With these options, it’s easy to blend the tarp to your desired look. If you want to keep fishing gear and camping equipment dry in an area next to your tent, you could get a green tent to match your tent. If you’re covering cords of firewood for the winter, you may want a bright color that makes the tarp easier to find after a snowstorm.

What’s the Difference Between Cut Size and Finish Size?

If you notice, the tarp sizes are all cut size. Cut size is the size of the tarp before hems, seams, and grommets are added. You lose around 3 inches per side when the final hem and grommets are added. Make sure you consider this when choosing your tarp size. If you need to cover something that is 12′ by 12′, you’d need a tarp that’s at least 12.5′ x 12.5′. If none of the cut size tarps work for your needs, talk to us about custom sizes.
